Workforce, Education & Training

NIMHE's workforce, training and education programme aims to ensure there are enough staff, with the right knowledge, skills and experience, working together in the most effective ways, to provide person-centred approaches and support new models of care.

Here in the North East, Yorkshire and Humber we work closely with the Workforce Development Directorates, the Changing Workforce Programme and those agencies concerned with workforce development in the social care sector, to:

  • Identify and share positive practice in the recruitment and retention of staff
  • Support mental health and primary care organisations to develop new roles such as Support, Time and Recovery Workers and Graduate Primary Care Mental Health Workers.
  • Support staff groups to develop or change their roles
  • Support the development of a more diverse workforce
  • Support organisations to deliver more culturally sensitive services.
Leadership and Team Effectiveness

Effective leadership skills are essential for the continuous improvement and development of mental health services. The main aims of our Leadership and Team Effectiveness programme are to:

  • Complete the pilot pogramme "Effective Team Leadership and Change Management"
  • Build networks with the 5 Strategic Health Authority Leadership Leads and other relevant agencies to ensure a co-ordinated approach to leadership development across the region
  • Identify the key leadership issues, needs and existing programmes in the mental health community
  • Establish a learning and development network
  • Respond to national initiatives such as Agenda for Change, Improving Partnership for hospitals and the Management Development Agenda, to ensure the implications for mental health service delivery are fully recognised.
